The Kaleidopolis show will be among the final performances in the “Urban Pulse” international competition during the LUNAR: “Lights of Sofia” festival. Its creators, the Indonesian studio @thefox, already share a special connection with the festival, having won the international competition in 2023 with a work created for the façade of the Regional History Museum – Sofia. This year, they return to the city with a new show inspired by the city’s energy and the people who bring it to life.
The Fox, The Folks are famous worldwide with their 2D style storytelling, hand-drawn and motion graphic animation for projection mapping and the bright colors and fun visuals. You can learn more about the concept, challenges, and message behind their show in the interview here:
What attracted you to participate in the Urban Pulse competition?
We participated in LUNAR Festival of Lights and won the competition in 2023. Seeing how happy people were and feeling their positive energy was very special to us.
This year, we want to return that energy and celebrate Urban Pulse together with the people of Sofia once again.

What was the main inspiration behind your concept?
Kaleidopolis is inspired by the contrast between a heavy, static, monochromatic concrete world and the colorful energy of the people that transforms it into a vibrant kaleidoscope.
If the audience closes their eyes after seeing your show, which scene or moment would you most like them to remember?
The moment when colorful energy bursts through the monochromatic world and transforms the entire building into a living kaleidoscope.

What has been the most technically challenging aspect of creating a work for such a large-scale outdoor immersive projection environment?
Of course, the enormous scale. We need to make sure every movement and detail remains clear and impactful, even when viewed from far away.
The event is also a celebration of Sofia Day. In your opinion, what is most important for a city to be or to offer to its people? And what would be your wish for Sofia?
A city should give its people space to connect, express themselves, and celebrate together. Our wish is for Sofia to remain a city full of creative energy, where its history and new generations can continue to inspire one another.
